"Reflexology, or zone therapy is an alternative medicine involving the physical act of applying pressure to the feet, hands, or ears with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. It is based on what reflexologists claim to be a system of zones and reflex areas that they say reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work effects a physical change to the body. A 2009 systematic review of randomised controlled trials concludes that "The best evidence available to date does not demonstrate convincingly that reflexology is an effective treatment for any medical condition." On the diagram of the body - note 5 zones on the right and 5 zones on the left of the body's centerline, to give a total of 10 zones in the body. Note lines that divide the zones, especially where the lines from the arms join the lines of the body. Fill in the right half of the body for homework, to see if your students have been aware of this area. Diagram of the zones on the feet- number them... Divide the large toe (only one need be done) into five zones - always number from 1 to 5 from the medial to the lateral side. Note that the bump on the outside of each foot about half way down, is the 5th metatarsal bone and indicates the location of the waist on the feet. Lable the plantar, lateral, medial and dorsal views on the proper sheet. Relate the zones (meridians) to the body and the organs in each zone to the areas on the feet as we progress through the course. The right side of the body is related to the right foot and the left side of the body to the left foot. In other words there does not seem to be a crossover as we find with the nervous system. However there seem to be some people who do show the crossover, so be on the alert for them. ALL organs etc. in a zone are affected by working any reflex in that zone, as well as the specific reflex stimulating a specific organ.
